Larry Carlyle Hurst

LARRY CARLYLE HURST

Larry Carlyle Hurst who died August 25, 2026, was born at the Putnam County Hospital, Greencastle, on October 13, 1938, to Cecil Carlyle and Bessie Henry Hurst.

Larry graduated from Greencastle schools in 1956. As a member of the GHS FFA Dairy Judging Team, he traveled to the nationals in 1955 where they placed 2nd. In 1956 he won High Individual Judge and the National Championship with a three-man GHS team.  He attended the Purdue Agricultural Short Course in Lafayette in 1957. As well as farming, Larry was employed by IBM before working over 24 years for John Deere dealerships as parts manager. Before retiring, Larry carpentered with Bill Wallace of Wallace Construction, Reelsville.

A life-long faithful member of Deer Creek Primitive Baptist Church, he was ordained as an Elder in 1964.  Larry served as pastor for over 50 years at Deer Creek and Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Bedford as well as filling various appointments around the Midwest.  He was a caretaker of Deer Creek Church and Cemetery and member of the cemetery board.

He married Mary Frances Crodian on August 21, 1960, with whom he had Mark (Debbie) Hurst, Mary Ruth (Tim) Gould, both of Greencastle, Stephen (Julie) Hurst of Tennessee, and Paul (Dian) Hurst of Tipton. Mary Frances preceded him in death in 1985.  He married Martha Gloe Craver on July 13, 1986.  She survives.

After the family grew into the next generations, he enjoyed the adventures and antics of the grandchildren: Jennifer (Matt) Green of Marshall, Vanessa (Kirby) Boyd of Crawfordsville; Jake (Madison) Gould, of Greencastle, Sam Gould (fiancé Kelli Durant) of Wisconsin; Samantha (Robert) Cross, Rebecca (Andrew) Spiegelman, Matthew (fiancé Autumn Sanguinette) all of Tennessee; Nicole Hurst of Texas, and Larry Michael (Anna) Hurst of Sharpsville. Great-grandchildren include: Everly Green, Bentley Chapman, Cole and Allison Boyd, Logan and Mallory Gould, Ivy Cross, Eliza Jane and Henry Hurst. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Marlene Hurst, nieces Samantha Duncan, Kay (Andrew) Genotte, Kate Hurst (Jordan Nichols), Emily Hurst, and nephew TJ Hurst as well as other relatives and friends. 

He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jerry Hurst and Terry Hurst.

Besides his love of people and service to them, Larry enjoyed the lessons of nature through traveling, walking in the woods, gardening, tending and observing birds, and savoring the nighttime sky.  He named Bryce Canyon as his favorite destination and after retiring enjoyed visiting with fellow travelers on several trips around the U.S.
