Maurice Ray Downing

Maurice Ray Downing, 77, of Indianapolis, passed away October 3, 2021 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 11, 1944 in Danville, IL, son of Oscar and Edna (Judy) Downing, Jr.

As a US Army veteran, Maurice served 23 years active duty, in which he volunteered for 3 tours in Vietnam from 1966-1970. During his service, Maurice visited many interesting and unique places. Following active duty, he chose to continue his military career serving in many other roles.

After retiring at the rank of 1st Sergeant, Maurice spent many hours tinkering in his garage, and watching TV with his constant companions, Sassy Mae, Oscar and Tootsie, his beloved miniature Dachshunds.

Other pastime hobbies included fishing with his sons, and spending time with family and friends. Maurice was always the first person to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

In addition to his parents, Maurice was preceded in death by his brother, Leland Dale Downing.

Survivors include his children, Mark L. Downing, Mason L. Deane-Downing, Mitchell L. Downing and Mia L. Downing; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and former wife, Sharon L. Rigney.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled for a later date.
